· Whole-Wheat, Wheat Germ, Prune + Pumpkin Muffins
There are things that even your own mother doesn't tell you about the before-during-and-after of giving birth. That's why I bake these muffins.

In the margins of my dog-earred, molasses-stained recipe are all the names of new moms + their babies who've had these. This latest time around, was for momma-Heather, in honor of her delivering her second daughter, Nicola, who was born on September 8, 2007 at 9am sharp. A classic second baby — she came into this world hard and fast at 7 pounds, 7.5 ounces, 20 inches long.

The maternity ward at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital has only four rooms and it’s rarely filled to capacity, so a batch of these will help along any mother who’s there.

Heather + baby, along with papa Joe and big sister Lucia, are all doing fine. With a head of dark hair and long, poky big toes, Nicola’s a good eater already.
